FOR LUCK

Koi’s colours and shapes reflect their unique individuality — each one a living expression of variation, resilience, and possibility. Long associated with good fortune, abundance, and balanced energy, they move through the water with a confidence born of adaptability. For Luck draws on these symbolic qualities, relating to the long tradition of Nishikigoi imagery, where koi embody vitality, prosperity, and quiet strength. Their motion becomes a visual narrative of perseverance and renewal — a meditation on the virtues they carry and the beauty they create.

ARTIST STATEMENT

Photographed on medium-format negative film, For Luck captures koi in their natural motion. The work reflects a practice of patience and presence: watching, waiting, and allowing the image to emerge from the quiet choreography of the fish themselves. With the camera placed beside a large glass tank, their arcs, hesitations, and bursts of movement shape the composition within the frame. Each photograph holds a moment where colour, form, and motion align, revealing forms that echo the traditional strength and vitality associated with Nishikigoi imagery.
